There was a lot of talk about the pitch in the third test watching the test match get over in just 2 days. This time around, the pitch had a tinge of grass on it. The surface was very good for batting early on. But England batsmen played some careless shots and they were in trouble in the first innings. Ben Stokes proved to be the saviour for England, he battled against the Indian spinners, especially Ashwin, against whom he isn’t having a great record. He defended the good deliveries and found the scoring opportunities against the loose ones. England bundled down to 205 with Axar getting 4 wickets.
Rishab Pant and Washington Sundar Partnership
India in response didn’t get a great start as they lost Gill early on. Rohit and Pujara built a good partnership but Jack Leach once again got Pujara. Kohli never got going and he got dismissed on a duck. Rahane and Rohit got themselves hang in there. Rahane was finding some scoring opportunities here and there until he found himself caught in the first slip. India was in huge trouble after Rohit’s wicket. Someone had to step up to take the innings forward. It was none other than Rishabh Pant who took the opportunity with both hands. He started slow and after getting settled switched the gear. He started to attack Anderson. His reverse sweep against Anderson was the defining moment of the match. He got to his third test hundred with a six. He delivered when it mattered the most.
Washington Sundar also played his part. He handled the situation well. Unfortunately, he had to return to the pavilion on 96 not out.
Axar and Ashwin again stoop up and delivered taking 5 wickets each and kept England restricted.
It was the first test series for Axar Patel, mind you. He now has the most wickets in the debut series (max 3 Tests): 27 wickets. Ashwin was awarded man of the series which is his 8th such award after taking 32 wickets in the series. Rishabh Pant man of the match . India beat England by an innings & 25 runs. They will now play New Zealand in the WTC finals.
