KXIP beat RCB by 8 wickets to register only their second win of the season, both of which have come against RCB.

PERFORMERS OF THE DAY

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE Bat: Virat Kohli 48(39) Chris Morris 25(8) Bowl: Yuzi Chahal 3-0-35-1

KINGS XI PUNJAB Bat: KL Rahul 61(49) Chris Gayle 53(45) Bowl: Mohammed Shami 4-0-45-2 Murugan Ashwin 4-0-23-2

AS IT HAPPENED

RCB won the toss and chose to bat first. Despite Padikkal’s early departure, RCB had a good powerplay. After 6 overs, they were 57-1

No De Villiers at 4 Hurt RCB

Aaron Finch got out to a beautiful delivery by M Ashwin in the 7th over. To everyone’s surprise, it was Sundar who walked in to bat ahead of ABD. He lingered around for a bit before departing on 13 at a strike rate of below 100. Dube came in next, who tried to stitch a partnership with Kohli but perished after hitting a couple sixes, in a pursuit to up the ante. De Villiers came in after 16 overs. With less number of deliveries, De Villiers found it difficult to get going from the first ball on a sluggish Sharjah pitch. Kohli was RCB’s only hope of a launch in the last 5 overs but he too, joined De Villiers in the dressing room just 2 balls later.

Morris’s Heroics
Chris Morris smashed a quick 25 off 8 deliveries to help RCB touch the 170 mark. But it was never going to be enough.

THE CHASE Rahul-Mayank At It Again
Rahul and Mayank have undoubtedly been the most prolific opening pair this season. Mayank proved the decision a good one to send him as an opener ahead of Chris Gayle. There was no reason for Punjab to tweak something that was the only thing working for them i.e. their openers. KXIP were 56-0 after 6 overs.

The Universe Boss is Back

The Universe Boss aka Chris Gayle announced his arrival in this year’s IPL tonight. He scored a steady 53, took his time and launched at the correct moment. He smashed 4 sixes in 8 deliveries during the 16th and 17th overs to kill any hopes that RCB had.

KXIP almost made a mess Again!

KXIP needed just 11 runs from the last 3 overs. Both Rahul and Gayle were set on the crease. It looked like a cakewalk, should have been one but Punjab managed to get themselves in trouble again. The match went till the last ball, credit to Morris and Udana. Pooran made sure that Punjab crossed the line this time. He hit a 6 off Chahal to win the game for his team. Punjab won by 8 wickets to get a much needed win. They’re still languishing at the bottom of the table with 4 points but they’ll look to build on this win to get some momentum going.
